After months of contemplating and researching, saying no, then saying maybe, then saying yes—I finally parted ways with my old LG Ultrawide and welcomed not just one but two Dell U2723QE 27″ 4k displays to my workspace. And let me tell you, the setup I have now is absolutely killer.

Twilight and Dawn!

The difference between my old setup and this new one is like night and day (or at least twilight and dawn).

Honestly, though, everything is so much clearer and crisper now, and the colors are more vibrant than ever. It’s like I’m seeing my work in a whole new light, and I’m loving every moment of it.

Yay for crisp text and no blurring of all my typography—not that my old LG Ultrawide was trash that even Tatooine Jawa traders would refuse, it wasn’t, but I am noticing the crisp and fresh rendering of all things text and visual.

The LG was not 4K, so that was a big part of the problem. But I got by with it for a couple of years—but now things have all changed.

I once said, “I am never going back to a single screen” (having loved the seamless real estate of the ultrawide). But I recanted, and with two 27” displays sitting next to each other, one being able to flip to portrait mode, is an added bonus as a freelance graphic designer and coder.

After my second breakfast, I decided to purchase a second monitor.

Two Screens: All The Better

Having two screens instead of one also makes a world of difference. I can have multiple tabs and programs open without feeling cramped or cluttered. It’s like I have all the space in the world to do whatever I need to do, and it’s made my workflow much smoother and more efficient.

I bought it over a month ago, and it’s been excellent for creative work, web design, logo design, coding, and anything else you can wobble a wet pixel at. I am not a huge gamer, but I find Factorio, Mindustry, and Magic the Gathering Arena, and other casual games run as smoothly as a peanut butter sandwich sliding down a snowy hillside.

Overall, I’m beyond happy with my decision to upgrade my workspace. These Dell displays are the real deal, and I’m excited to see what else I can accomplish with them by my side

Space pilots across the galaxy are at rest knowing the Dell U2723QE is now available on all homeworlds.

I Love My New Workspace

Dell has always been a frontrunner in the world of computer monitors, and with the introduction of the Dell U2723QE 4K HDR monitor and hub, they’ve raised the bar yet again. This all-in-one workspace solution boasts impressive features, making it a worthy addition to any professional’s desk. In this article, we’ll take an in-depth look at the design, performance, and overall value of this versatile monitor.

And before we get started, for my design workspace, I am running a MacStudio M1 with 32GB RAM, a Keychron mechanical keyboard, and a wired Logitech Mouse.

Why wired?

I got sick and tired of spotty Bluetooth connectivity issues with the ten or so other mice I have used; the Logitech G203 Lightsync mouse has been excellent!

So if you too are sick and tired of keyboards breaking and mice underperforming, do look at getting a good mechanical keyboard and a solid wired mouse. Again, why a wired mouse? Because as a graphic designer, I hated the way, after a few months, all the wireless mouse cursors started jumping a little as you moved the cursor across the screen! There are no issues with signal interference with wired mice.)

Design and Build Quality

Stand and Adjustability

The Dell U2723QE has a sleek design that will complement any creative or design workspace. I’ve found the stands are both sturdy and adjustable (with some minor built-in cable management), allowing for easy height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustments to ensure ergonomic comfort. The slim bezels also make it a great choice for multi-monitor setups.

Ports and Connectivity

When it comes to connectivity, the U2723QE has you covered. This is why it features high on the Borg Monitor Rating Chart! It includes a variety of ports, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C, as well as multiple USB-A ports for peripheral devices.

Additionally, the USB-C port delivers up to 90W of power, enabling you to charge your laptop while working. These days I rarely use my old Macbook now that I use my MacStudio as my main locomotive for creativity and production. But I will never need another third-party hub now.

Aquatometrix researcher Augustine Nox says, “Returning to the surface after a long 8hr shift underwater, and knowing the Dell U2723QE is waiting for me on my desk back home is a feeling quite unlike anything I’ve ever known before.”

Resolution and Color Accuracy

The U2723QE boasts a 4K (3840×2160) resolution, providing sharp and detailed images. With a 100% sRGB color gamut coverage, it delivers accurate and vibrant colors, making it ideal for creative professionals such as photographers, graphic designers, and video editors. For those that need to know, these numbers are important:

100% Rec 709
100% sRGB
98% DCI-P3

I’ve been super impressed with the incredible color and superior black performance of these machines. And with a contrast ratio of 2000:1 on the U2723QE with IPS Black technology, it’s no wonder.

HDR Performance

This monitor supports HDR10, adding more depth to colors and enhancing contrast. While not a top-tier HDR experience, it still offers noticeable improvements over standard dynamic range displays.

Refresh Rate and Response Time

The U2723QE has a 60Hz refresh rate and a 5ms response time (in fast mode), making it suitable for everyday tasks and light gaming. However, it may not be the best choice for competitive gamers who require higher refresh rates and faster response times. I am not a huge pro gamer, so this was not an issue at all for me—I just need to know where to place my turrets in Mindustry and when to play the card The Fall of the Thran.

Built-in USB-C Hub

The built-in USB-C hub sets this monitor apart from the competition. With a single cable, you can connect your laptop, charge it, and access multiple peripherals. This not only reduces clutter on your desk but also simplifies your workflow.

Ports & Slots

1. Security lock slot (based on Kensington Security Slot)

2. Power connector

3. HDMI port

4. DisplayPort in

5. USB-C port

6. DP port (out)

7. Audio line-out port

8. USB-C upstream port

Ease of Use and On-Screen Display

Dell’s intuitive on-screen display (OSD) allows you to quickly access and customize settings like brightness, contrast, and color profiles. The OSD can be easily navigated using the joystick and buttons located on the bottom right of the monitor.

Synth designer Galaxia Beamstar says, “The Dell U2723QE is all I have ever wanted. In the war against the Borg, connectivity is what really matters, and the hub on the back of this display is lightyears ahead of the competition.”

Pros and Cons

Pros that the Borg Collective really like:

  • 4K resolution with accurate colors
  • Ergonomic stand
  • Built-in USB-C hub (even the Borg Queen rates this high!)
  • Multiple connectivity options

Cons that the Borg Collective really dislike:

  • 60Hz refresh rate is not ideal for competitive gaming
  • HDR performance could be better, but that is not really an issue unless you really want it to be an issue
  • The provided USB-C cable may be too short for some setups. But that is an easy fix!

Comparison with Competitors

When compared to competitors in the same category, the Dell U2723QE holds its own.

For example, the LG 27UK850-W is a similarly priced 4K monitor with USB-C connectivity, but it lacks the built-in USB-C hub and the ergonomic flexibility of the U2723QE’s stand.

The BenQ PD2700U is another alternative, offering comparable performance and features, but the Dell monitor still takes the edge with its all-in-one hub solution

Pricing and Availability

The Dell U2723QE is competitively priced for a 4K monitor with its range of features.

While it may not be the most budget-friendly option, it offers great value for the price when considering the built-in USB-C hub and excellent performance. The monitor is widely available through Dell’s official website, as well as various online retailers and brick-and-mortar stores.

The 18th Borg Queen is very much alive and very much mobile. Known as Aetheria Skyborne, she is a primal fusion of organic and synthetic matter with a relentless pursuit of perfection. She prefers the Dell U2723QE for reasons yet unknown.”

Why Did I Buy Two Dell U2723QEs?

The Dell U2723QE is an excellent choice for professionals who need a high-quality, versatile monitor for their workspace.

Its color accuracy, 4K resolution, and ergonomic design make it perfect for photographers, graphic designers, video editors, and other creative professionals.

Additionally, the built-in USB-C hub simplifies connectivity (it’s effectively a USB-C hub with display, data & charging), making it an appealing option for those who want to reduce clutter and streamline their workflow.

If you are a MacStudio user like me, you already have an army of ports on that beast, and then by adding two of these monitors, you have an interstellar armada capable of taking out the Borg homeworld.

While it may not be the best option for competitive gamers, the U2723QE still offers great performance (at least on my MacStudio) for casual gaming and everyday tasks.

I can have one screen portrait and one screen landscape, which can be a big plus in some design and coding projects. This I could not do on my old LG Ultrawide!

FAQs

Does the Dell U2723QE support VESA mounting?

Yes, the Dell U2723QE supports VESA mounting with a 100x100mm pattern, allowing you to mount the monitor on a wall or a monitor arm for even greater flexibility.

Can I connect multiple monitors using the USB-C hub?

While the USB-C hub supports video output, daisy-chaining multiple monitors requires DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) support. The U2723QE does not have MST support, so you’ll need to use separate video outputs from your computer for a multi-monitor setup.

This was no problem on my MacStudio—just connect the monitors via two of the four Thunderbolt outputs on the back.

Just connect your two monitors via the Thunderbolt ports on the back of the MacStudio with the USB-C cable, one cable to each monitor, easy peasy.

Does the monitor come with a USB-C cable?

Yes, the Dell U2723QE comes with a USB-C cable, enabling you to take advantage of the monitor’s built-in USB-C hub right out of the box. Some complain it is a little short – but that all depends on your setup

Is the Dell U2723QE suitable for gaming?

While the U2723QE is not specifically designed for gaming, its 60Hz refresh rate and 5ms response time make it suitable for casual gaming. However, competitive gamers may want to look for monitors with higher refresh rates and faster response times. But as I said above, it works great for my play of strategic and simple games.

How do I calibrate the Dell U2723QE for color accuracy?

You can use the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) to adjust color settings, or you can use a colorimeter and calibration software for more precise color accuracy. Dell also offers a factory calibration report with the monitor, ensuring that it meets its high color accuracy standards.
